THE FAKE PSYCHIC FRAMEWORK
Shawn pretends to be psychic. Syd pretends to be a prophet. Both are actually hyper-observant — they notice things others miss and dress observations in supernatural theater. Both use the con for access they wouldn’t otherwise have. Both are fundamentally helping people through the lie. Both carry the tension of potential exposure.
THE ELABORATE INTRODUCTIONS
Shawn never introduces Gus the same way twice. “Lavender Gooms.” “Ghee Buttersnaps.” “MC Clap Yo Handz — with a Z.” Total sincerity while Gus stands there and takes it.
This directly inspired Syd’s ever-shifting title and his habit of introducing party members with improvised formal titles. The title changes every time. Party members get fake titles delivered with the same conviction as real ones. Escalates over the session — first introduction is almost normal, last one is unhinged. See Titles and Introductions for the full list.
HUMOR MECHANICS
- Comedy comes from confidence — total commitment to the bit even when it’s falling apart.
- Shawn references pop culture nobody gets. Syd quotes “Veri” and nobody can tell if he means the god or the adjective — see Veri Wordplay.
- Deflects serious moments with humor, then hits genuine emotion when you’re not expecting it. The “Suffer the little children” moment works BECAUSE he’s been saying nonsense all session.
- The psychic readings (hand to temple, dramatic pauses, wincing as the “vision” arrives) = Syd’s finger-to-temple gesture and confident delivery.
EMOTIONAL CORE
- Shawn’s father taught him observation in a complicated relationship. The 12th Prophet taught Syd the con — see Backstory.
- Both mask vulnerability with performance. The comedy IS the defense mechanism.
- Both have deep loyalty to people they’ve decided to protect, and will drop the act when it matters.
KEY DIFFERENCES
- Shawn is irreverent. Syd has a genuine spiritual streak — he wonders if Garl Glittergold is watching.
- Shawn operates within a system (police). Syd operates outside every system.
- Shawn’s con is self-serving first. Syd’s is other-serving first.
