Visual Field Management

To remember something, put it in your visual field. To forget, get it out of sight.

Out of sight, out of mind.

Negative aspect (things to remove): Spartan desk — monitor, mouse, keyboard, a few trinkets. Empty desktop. Dock with only frequently-used apps. Clean and orderly apartment. Everything out of place is visual noise and a distraction.

Positive aspect (things to keep visible): Two windows open at all times — todo list occupies the left third of the screen, current work occupies the right two-thirds. At a glance you can see:

  1. What you’re currently working on.
  2. What you will work on next.
  3. The list of active projects, so you don’t forget they exist.
