Backstory

Korbin Lumière, a 16-year-old Aasimar Fighter, was born as the third son into the noble House Lumière of Elyria, known for their devotion to the Faith of the Sacred Flame. As an Aasimar, Korbin’s birth was seen as a divine blessing, solidifying his family’s status among the religious elite. From childhood, Korbin displayed exceptional physical strength and intelligence, excelling in combat training and academic studies. However, his social skills lagged far behind, much to his family’s dismay.

Korbin approached every situation with pure logic, failing to grasp the nuances of social interactions and political maneuvering. This trait became apparent in his friendship with Eldrin, his squire. Unlike other nobles, Korbin saw no reason to treat Eldrin as inferior, preferring his company to that of other noble children. Their friendship took a dramatic turn when Eldrin, at 12, manifested signs of being mageborn.

As Eldrin was taken away by the Amethyst Academy, Korbin openly questioned the logic behind persecuting mageborn individuals. This event sparked his curiosity about arcane magic, leading him to secretly study forbidden texts. To Korbin, understanding arcane magic was simply another field of knowledge to explore. As he grew older, Korbin’s inability to navigate social situations became more pronounced. He excelled in physical contests and scholarly debates but struggled in diplomatic functions. He would bluntly point out logical inconsistencies in political arguments, unaware of the offense he caused.

The final straw came during a public ceremony when Korbin, then 15, questioned the Divine Matriarch’s stance on mageborn persecution. He presented a logical argument about the inconsistency between The Sacred Flame’s teachings of compassion and the treatment of mageborn individuals, causing a scandal that deeply embarrassed his family. Faced with Korbin’s growing reputation as an oddity and potential liability, his family devised a plan to send him on a “pilgrimage” to Westemär. They explained that he would pay respects at the ruins of Drakkenheim to understand the dangers of unchecked arcane power. Korbin, in his naivety, accepted this explanation at face value, seeing it as a logical step in his education.

Now at 16, Korbin finds himself in Westemär, unaware of the true motivations behind his “pilgrimage.” His exceptional strength and intelligence serve him well in this new environment, but his social awkwardness and naive worldview present significant challenges. He sees this journey as an opportunity to learn more about the world, particularly about arcane magic and the lives of mageborn individuals like his friend Eldrin.
